Investigators Focus on Whether Midtown Gunman Was Targeting N.F.L. Offices

Investigators are focusing on whether the Midtown gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, was targeting the N.F.L. offices in a deadly shooting rampage on Monday, July 28, 2025.

According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, investigators recovered a note from Tamura in which he discussed CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and appeared to blame the N.F.L. for his injury. Tamura was a high school football player but never played in college or the N.F.L.

The building at 345 Park Avenue houses offices for the N.F.L., as well as Blackstone, KPMG, and other companies. While Tamura entered the building armed and began firing, initial investigations suggest he may have taken the wrong elevator bank, ending up on a different floor (Rudin Management) instead of the N.F.L. headquarters.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of four people, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam and a Blackstone employee. An N.F.L. employee was also wounded and is hospitalized in stable condition. Tamura, who drove cross-country from the Las Vegas area to New York, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor. Police also found a concealed weapons permit, prescription medications, a rifle case, a loaded revolver, and ammunition in his car.

The motive remains under investigation, but the discovery of the note strongly suggests a grievance against the N.F.L. related to CTE.
