Tom Lehrer, Musical Satirist With a Dark Streak, Dies at 97
Tom Lehrer, the renowned musical satirist known for his sharp wit and darkly humorous songs, has died at the age of 97. He passed away on July 26, 2025, at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Lehrer, a mathematician by profession, gained widespread recognition in the 1950s and 60s for his satirical songs that fearlessly lampooned social issues, politics, and human follies. His unique style, often accompanied by his own piano playing, tackled taboo subjects with a sophisticated and often macabre twist.

Some of his most famous songs include "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," "The Elements," "The Masochism Tango," and "The Vatican Rag." Although he largely retired from performing and recording in the 1970s to focus on his academic career, his work continued to resonate with new generations and influenced countless comedians and satirists.
